I am a versatile aerospace engineer with a broad knowledge of multiple topics that I have acquired during my studies, work, and private life activities. I have gained understanding of aerodynamics (experimental methods and modelling) during my studies at the University of Glasgow. It provided me with a good basis to continue as a researcher at the Technical University of Munich, where I worked on FLEXOP and FLIPASED projects. During the two projects I undertook the Flight Test Manager position for a subscale demonstrator (7m wingspan, 65kg, fixed wing) program learning the peculiarities of flight testing of UAVs, performing flight test data analysis, and constantly doing my best to improve as a leader of a team. I take responsibility for my mistakes and do my best to acknowledge the limitations of my knowledge.
I require challenges at work. That is why in 2021 I applied to for the most challenging job there is - to become an astronaut with ESA. I made it to the third selection round together with the remaining 400 applicants (out of 23000). But at that time, the inspiring astronaut selection journey stopped there, so I continue to look for challenges elsewhere.
In parallel to my research work, I have been highly active in the cycling scene. I have raced in Lithuania, Germany and Austria. But the complexities of cycling aerodynamics have a special place among my interests. Apart from reading about the advancements in the topic, I also performed aerodynamic tests on myself and used my expertise to improve my time-trial results.
I believe that the feedback received during my rover scout programme 15 years ago still applies: “<Julius> has an ability to stay calm, balanced and focused in stressful situations.”
Playing instruments, camping, hiking, and (most recently) repairing my 40-year-old car are among the other hobbies I have.
In 2022 I participated in an amateur rally "Budapest-Bamako", which started from Hungary and ended in Sierra Leone. Our team, Team Rally Post, had organized a fundraiser for a school close to Freetown.
I joined scouts in 2004, successfully completed the youth educational programme and in 2009 became an adult volunteer. From 2010 till 2012 I participted in the rover scout programme. The goal of the programme was to develop responsible and self-confident leaders under physical stress and survival conditions.
I volunteered in at least 25 scout camps with various responsibilities (guide of an age group, guide of specific activities, commandant of the camp). In 2017 I was the commandant where I coordinated the logistics and structure in the week-long summer camp (around 150 people).
Cycling is my favorite choice for staying fit. I am curious to investigate the limits of my own body and occasional cycling competitions is one way to approach it. I also enjoy reading cycling-related scientific articles about human physiology and try to apply the findings for improving my own performance.
Finally, I enjoy following the sport and writing articles about my cycling experiences every now and then.
